If you’re curious about woodworking, but don’t know where to start… this is the class for you!

Our 101 classes are intended for folks with little to no experience with woodworking. We’ll take you from some rough cut boards to a finished picture frame you can take home with you. All along the way we’ll walk you through what each machine does and how to use it safely and effectively. We’ll also include a couple of things at the end to help you care for your frame and then you’ll have something that’s both beautiful and functional.

All of our classes and events are run by folks in the community. It’s for woodworkers, by woodworkers. In this case, Dennis will be running the show. He has over forty years of woodworking experience, eight years of experience selling his art at craft fairs, and for three years taught short courses at the University of Wisconsin. He prides himself on showing people how to create something they can be proud of.

In this class, you will learn the ins and outs of all the major power tools, including: table saw, jointer, planer, routers, and sanders. Over the course of 3 weeks, in two hour sessions, instructor Dennis Feggestad will guide you through the production of your own picture frame from start to finish, so you have a completely finished product that’s yours to keep.

In two hour sessions, you will go over the safety requirements of each tool, how to use it, and get that first experience under the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor. You will also learn how to properly care for your picture frame.

All tools, finishes, and lumber will be provided in the class. Hearing protection, eye protection, and RZ Mask brand face masks will also be provided. For masks, please email hello@norfolkwoodshop.com with the size, or come into the shop during open hours to get fitted. The mask will then be yours to keep. You can check out RZ mask's fitting guide at https://rzmask.com/pages/sizing. Safety aids will also be provided in class. We'll also provide with some finish and Grand Finishes Wood Wax for you to finish your frame with.

Please note: Each student will be responsible for showing up on time for each session, as instruction will begin promptly at the start. Each student will also be required to sign a liability waiver, as power tools are inherently dangerous to work with. Dennis will instruct and guide in the proper use, so danger is mitigated, however even professional woodworkers must stay sharp after years of working with these tools.
